    Kristine Hatanaka (Co-Executive Director and Creative Director of Art)

    Mrs. Kristine Hatanaka graduated with Honors and holds a BA in Art from California State University Fullerton. She currently teaches Drawing and Painting, Studio Art and Advanced Placement Studio Art. Mrs. Hatanaka is the Advisor and Creative Director for (Starving Young Artists) the Academy’s Art Department and the Co-Director of the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts.

    Mrs. Hatanaka has established internships, educational programs, and student exhibitions with The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, UCLA Fowler Museum, Santa Monica Museum of Art, and The Ryman Program at USC. She has implemented college level art classes through The Santa Monica College Outreach Program, West Los Angeles College Outreach Program, and The Santa Monica College Summer Institutes and Launchpad Program. Her students have received scholarships, award recognition, and participated in exhibitions on the local, regional, and national levels.

    Mrs. Hatanaka was the recipient of the International Teaching Program in Japan and received Teacher of the Year honors from Otis College of Art and Design. She is currently serving on the UCLA Fowler Museum Education Advisory Committee. In 2003, she received Mentor Teacher of The Year from The Ryman Program. In 2004, Kristine was a recipient of the SURDNA Arts Teacher Fellowship. She is also the Winner of the 2005 California Association for the Gifted May V. Seago Memorial Scholarship. In 2005, Kristine received the Sony Pictures Teacher of the Year Award for CCUSD. She was also the recipient of the Teacher Institute of Contemporary Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2009, Kristine Hatanaka was selected to participate in a nationwide teaching initiative called, Art21 for Educators. [top]


     

    Dr. Tony Spano (Co-Executive Director and Creative Director of Music)

    Dr. Tony Spano is in his 12th year as Music Teacher at Culver City HS. In addition the regular day music classes at CCHS, he is also the Creative Director of Music and Co-Director of the CCHS AVPA. Originally from Denver, he received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and his MFA and DMA in Instrumental Conducting from UCLA. He is also the faculty sponsor for CCHS's student-run Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA). Outside of CCHS, Dr. Spano is on the Board of Directors of Pacific Serenades (www.pacser.org), a Los Angeles-based chamber music organization, and also writes occasionally for Frontiers In LA magazine.

    In 2006 he was selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities to receive a grant to attend the “Mozart’s Worlds” institute in Vienna, Austria. In 2005 he won a Surdna Foundation Arts Teacher Fellowship which allowed him to attend the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles conference in Singapore. In Spring 2003, Dr. Spano was named one of ten finalists for the California League of High School’s “Educator of the Year” program in Region 8 (Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Kern, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties). He was also selected to participate in the Toyota International Teacher Program which featured a two week professional development tour of Japan in the summer of 2003. [top]

    Julie Carson has been teaching for the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts at Culver High School since 2006. She has served as an adjunct professor on both the Santa Monica College and West Los Angeles College dance faculties. Prior to her work with the AVPA, Ms. Carson has taught technique and creative elements of modern dance in private studio, elementary school and university settings, including Cal State Los Angeles and Rio Hondo College. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Dance from California State University at Long Beach and her Master of Fine Arts. in Choreography from UCLA. Her dance work has taken her from the streets of Disneyland to high sacred pageantry, from regional musical theater work to performances for the U.S. President. Ms. Carson has recently completed 8-years of Program Management of The Irvine Dance in California Program, a statewide funding source for professional choreographers working in western and world dance forms.     Sheila Silver (Creative Director of Theatre)

    Sheila Silver comes to CCHS/AVPA with 25 years of teaching drama and directing theatrical productions at the secondary level. She also served as Director of Education at South Coast Repertory Regional Theatre. Sheila obtained both her BA and MFA in theatre from California State University Fullerton with an emphasis in Educational Theatre. She has served on the boards of the American Alliance for Theatre Educators and American Theater for the Disabled. Sheila was honored in 2002 by the National Endowment of the Arts/Kennedy Center as Outstanding Theatre Educator of the Year. [top]


     

    Cari Ann Shim Sham (Dance Professor)

    Cari Ann is in her seventh year with the AVPA and her fourth year of serving as the Chair of the Culver City Academy of Visual and Performing Arts Dance Department. She designed, developed and founded the department in June 2003. She teaches various techniques of dance and choreography, and produces the bi-annual Dance Off! Dance concert. She is a professional Choreographer and dancer serving the greater Los Angeles Art Scene for the past 13 years. She is an Alumni of the UCLA World Arts and Cultures Department, with a BA in Choreography and Performance Art. She specializes in Choreography for film, and works as a film maker in her field. She's screened her films at Dance Camera West Film Festival and at UCLA. She's performed professionally for Victoria Marks, David Rousseve, Nzingha Camara, Nina Kaufman, Julie Carson, Dmitri Kmelnitski, Ichuro Irie and Norton Wisdom. She has choreographed for the UCLA WAC department, the UCLA Opera Department, Los Angeles Guild Opera, Cirque du Soliel, Narnia Productions, The Chance Theater, Tiny Band Productions, Cabaret X, Track 16, Fresh Tracks, and Highways. Cari Ann is a first year Graduate Student pursuing an MFA in Choreography at UCLA's World Arts and Cultures Department. [top]

    Omar Inguanzo (Film Professor)

    Mr. Omar Inguanzo is a graduate of the film and theatre programs at AVPA and is a graduate of the Los Angeles Film School. He currently works throughout Southern California as a sound designer, lighting designer, and film editor. His theatre credits include "Into the Woods", "The Wiz", "Pippin", "Crimes of the Heart", "Java Drama", "The Diviners", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "1984", "The Glass Menagerie", "The Mousetrap", "The Angelina Project", "Confirmation", "Therese Raquin" (Chance Theatre), "One Flea Spare", and "Flow My Tears the Policeman Said" (The Evidence Room). His film credits include "King of the Road" and "the American Hero". He currently works in both the film and theatre departments as a technical director. [top]


     

    Leon Martell (Film Professor)

    Mr. Leon Martell received his BA in theatre and history from the University of Vermont and his MFA with a specialization in directing from the University of Iowa. He has taught at the University of Iowa, Occidental College, UCLA, and is an instructor for A.S.K. Theater Projects Playwrights in the Schools. His Directing credits include "Hoss Drawin"’, "1961 El Dorado", "Twin Otter", "Guys at the Spunk Hole", "Kindling", and "The Big Picture". As a writer Mr. Martell’s credits are endless (from stage, film, to television) and include "Hoss Drawin", "Billy Chops Bricks", and "Mooncalf". His acting credits include "Twelfth Night", "Danube", "The Match Maker", and "Picket Fences". He currently teaches scriptwriting and movement for the Academy's film and theatre students.     Darryl McCane (Film Professor)

    Mr. Darryl McCane received his BA in Radio, Television, & Film from San Jose State and his Masters of Fine Arts from Columbia University in New York. His film credits include "The Big Split", "The Girl in the Watermelon", "Steel Heel", and "Temptation". His theatre credits include "A Soldier’s Play", "The Colored Museum", "Death of a Salesman", and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest". Mr. McCane currently teaches Cinema History and Elements of Film Production in the Film Department. He also teaches Acting in the Theatre Department. [top]


     

    Lisa Michel (AVPA Chamber Singers Director, Vocal Director for various AVPA productions)

    Lisa Michel has been a member of the teaching staff at Culver City High School and the AVPA since 2001. She is director of the Chamber Singers, the AVPA’s elite after-school singing group, and has been vocal director of many of the high school musicals and Cabaret Nights. In 2008 she won a SURDNA teaching artist fellowship and was thrilled to spend a summer in Italy participating in the Sarteano Chamber Choral Conducting Workshop. Before coming to Culver City, she lived in New York and enjoyed a career as a professional vocalist and voice teacher, recording cds and performing and touring around the U.S. and in Germany.     Nate Nichols (Film Professor)

    Nate Nichols graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in English. He earned the Hopwood writing award while at Michigan. He went on to study film at Columbia University in New York City were he received his M.F.A. Nate has years of experience as a writer for the L.A. New Times, the Dallas Observer, MCA Records and Launch.com. He has also had numerous positions on production and post-production with New Line Cinema where he worked on over 20 feature films.
