Danger Zone Dance Presents

“Across the Universe”

Culver City High School’s Danger Zone Dance Company (DZDC) proudly presents its 2017 spring concert, Across the Universe: Without the Frost, We’re Outta Space in four performances from Thursday, April 20 to Saturday, April 22. DZDC, which was temporarily displaced from its home this year, reflects on this experience  in new dances featuring styles spanning the universe from Bollywood to ballet to hip-hop, and everything in between. DZDC, performing at the Veteran’s Auditorium in Culver City, 4117 Overland Ave., will run 7pm performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights and a 1 pm Saturday matinee. Tickets for all shows will be $12 for general admission, $8 for high-school students/senior citizens/faculty and $5 for ASB sticker holders/children 12 and under. Tickets will be sold at the door. Doors open 30 minutes before each show, and space is limited. Get there early!

Across the Universe reflects on DZDC’s perseverance and dedication to dance, in the wake of the closure its longtime home, the Robert Frost Auditorium for much-needed renovations. The building, originally built in 1963 and last renovated 17 years ago, lacked a dance studio and had major structural problems. The renovations sent all of the AVPA departments that it housed scrambling for space, including DZDC, which has had an especially hard time finding dance-friendly temporary housing. The company has had to hold classes in cafeterias, school gyms, and miscellaneous classrooms, as best summarized by Creative Director Julie Carson: “We have sought out any room across the high-school and middle-school campuses, full or empty, clean or unclean, and continued to dance”. This year truly tested our commitment to AVPA dance, and to dance in general, and DZDC prevailed to create Across the Universe!

The show was choreographed by advanced students, many of whom take the Text and Movement class, and AVPA dance faculty. The pieces are interspersed with funny and sometimes thought-provoking “transitions” to present a cohesive dance-theater concert, for which AVPA Dance is known. The title Across the Universe is an ode to the Beatles music that the faculty uses in their choreography and the transitional pieces. In addition, the concert will be lit by students from AVPA’s Theater Lighting Class led by professional lighting designer and AVPA alumnus Joey Guffman.

Danger Zone Dance rehearses for their spring dance concert, “Across the Universe, Without the Frost We’re Outta Space,” in the film room at CCHS.
