The Academy of Visual and Performing Arts Film department is an after school film ACADEMY where students learn all aspects of filmmaking; from screenwriting through post-production.  Additionally, students write and produce several short films throughout the year.  CTE/AVPA hosts industry professional guest speakers, and participates in hands-on technical workshops.  We have mandatory classes twice per week on Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:45 until approximately 5:15 pm. Other requirements are once/month AVPA convocation (one Wednesday / month, immediately after school for approx. 30 minutes in The Frost) and occasional additional filming days on weekdays and weekends throughout the year.

YOU DO NOT NEED ANY PRIOR FILM EXPERIENCE TO JOIN AVPA FILM.

What We’re Looking for in CTE / AVPA Film Students:

  • Responsibility & Reliability: This is a BIG commitment so please make sure you’re ready/willing/able to fully commit to the program and to your film crews.

  • Dedication: We work long hours while filming so you must be enthusiastic about filmmaking.

  • Initiative: The more initiative you take in AVPA film, the more you’ll get out of the program.  There are many opportunities for you to work on multiple sets, learn various film crew positions, and volunteer to help film school and community events. Therefore, we love students who are proactive and eager to learn.

  • Collaboration: We rarely work on solo projects so it’s very important that you enjoy working in groups. Even though you are assigned to a specific film crew position, you are still part of a team – your film crew.

Here’s What to Expect in Your Interview:

You will come up with an original idea for a film that you will “pitch” to us.  Pitching means that you will tell us the basic storyline of your film in 2-3 minutes.  This film can be any genre and does not have to be a film that you can actually make. You will be pitching to the AVPA School of Film leadership cabinet and to the creative director; therefore, you’ll be pitching to no more than 5 people total. After your pitch, we will ask you these exact questions:

  1. What are some of your favorite films?

  2. What excites / interests you about movies or movie making?

  3. Is there any area of filmmaking in particular that you’re interested in?  (Example, cinematography, writing, editing, or various jobs on set like sound or lighting).  Again, it is not necessary to know this because we don’t expect you to have any prior experience so it’s perfectly ok for you not to have an answer to this question.

  4. Are you available to commit to every Monday and Tuesday after school, one Wednesday/month after school for convocation, and occasional weekends and/or additional weekdays for filming?

The entire interview will be approx 5-6 minutes total. We understand that you might be nervous so we’ll do our best to put you at ease.

We are a very open-minded and diverse film family with vastly different personality types but we share one very common thread: our love of film!
